Davis and Steele Named to Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-American Team

TUSCON, Ariz. – Jayden Davis and Lucas Steele of the Samford Baseball team were both named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-American team on Wednesday, solidifying a solid rookie campaign for the two.

The Dynamic duo split Southern Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2023, with Davis earning media Freshman of the Year and Steele garnering coaches Freshman of the Year. Both were also named to the SoCon All-Freshman squad.

A 2023 All-SoCon First team selection, Davis led the Bulldogs and ranked eighth in the Southern Conference with a .358 batting average in 2023, the highest batting average by a Bulldog since the 2013 season. His team-high 82 base hits ranked sixth in the SoCon and marked the most by a Bulldog since 2016. Davis's most noteworthy accomplishment in 2023 was undoubtedly his program-record 37-game hitting streak that spanned from March 14 to May 25, which also set a new SoCon record for the longest hitting streak. He additionally led the team with 26 multi-hit performances.

Steele led the Bulldogs in both slugging percentage (.635) and OPS (1.039) in 2023, with his slugging percentage ranking fifth in the SoCon. The Hoover, Ala. native ranked second on the team in batting average (.315), RBI (51), home runs (16), and doubles (15). The switch-hitting utility man recorded 16 multi-hit efforts and 10 multi-RBI games.

Davis and Steele's recognition marks the first time since that a Bulldog was named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshmen All-American team since Sonny DiChiara earned the honor in 2019.
