GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. VMI (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men's basketball team will look to set a new school record for longest win streak when the Bulldogs host the VMI Keydets Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Pete Hanna Center.
Samford enters Saturday's game with a mark of 14-2 overall and 3-0 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs earned a 79-70 win over UNC Greensboro Thursday night. Samford has won its last 14-straight games, tying the 1960-61 team for the school record for longest win streak. The streak is also tied with Utah State for the longest current win streak in the country.
Samford and VMI have met 22 previous times, with Samford holding a 17-5 series lead. The teams met twice last season, with Samford winning both contests. The Bulldogs won, 87-78 at home and, 96-61 in Lexington.
So far this season, Samford has been led by junior
Achor Achor, averaging 15.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, leading the team in both categories. Junior
A.J. Staton-McCray is averaging 13.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Rylan Jones leads the team in assists, dishing out 5.4 assists per contest.
Entering this week, Samford ranked in the top 10 in the nation in several categories. Samford ranks in the top 10 in bench points per game (5th-38.80 ppg.), assists per game (3rd-20.5), fastbreak points per game (2nd-18.47 pg.), scoring offense (4th-89.5 ppg.), steals per game (6th-11.0 pg.), three-point percentage (5th-40.6%) and turnovers forced per game (8th-18.00 pg.).
The VMI Keydets enter Saturday's game with a mark of 3-13 overall and 0-3 in Southern Conference play. VMI played at Chattanooga Thursday evening. The Keydets fell to the Mocs by a score of 109-61.
VMI has been led so far this season by Brennan Watkins, averaging 15.2 points per game. Tyran Cook is averaging 12.4 points per game for the Keydets. Koree Cotton is currently scoring 12.3 points per game for VMI. Taeshaud Jackson II leads VMI in rebounding, grabbing 10.4 boards per contest.
