BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University volleyball team will open the 2024 regular season by hosting Mississippi State Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Alcorn State Saturday at 4 p.m.
Samford posted a record of 16-15 overall and 9-7 in Southern Conference play last season.
Samford returns its top four players in kills,
Gracie Lynn Butler (469),
Kaleigh Meritt (380),
Greer Golden (196) and
Kate Wonus (185) from last season. Samford also returns its top assists player in
Lexi Thatcher (845), and its top six players in digs in
Kate Morgan (485), Butler (303),
Annabelle Straty (202), Meritt (186), Thatcher (178) and
Amelia Johnston (95).
Samford and Mississippi State have met 21 previous times, with MSU holding a 20-1 series lead. The teams last met on Sept. 6, 2002, with Mississippi State taking a 3-0 win in Starkville. Samford's lone win in the series came on Oct. 2, 2001, with Samford taking a 3-1 win in Seibert Hall.
Samford and Alcorn State have played five previous times, with Samford holding a 5-0 series advantage. The teams met last season on Aug. 26, 2023, with Samford taking a 3-0 win in a tournament at Memphis.
Mississippi State posted a record of 13-15 overall and 6-12 in the SEC last season. Alcorn State finished the 2023 season with a mark of 1-21 overall and 1-15 in the SWAC.
