BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford men's basketball team hosts Chattanooga on Wednesday night at the Pete Hanna Center for one of the biggest Southern Conference games of the season. The game is scheduled to tip at 6:30 p.m. as the Bulldogs enter the game with a 19-6 record while the Mocs sit at 17-8 while both carry a 9-3 SoCon record, tied atop the league standings.
The Samford Bulldogs are coming off a 66-59 defeat at ETSU in their previous game on Saturday. The defeat marked just the second time the Bulldogs were swept in league play since the COVID season of 2020-21. The Bulldogs had their worst offensive performance in two years as they scored under 60 points for just the second time in that stretch and shot a season-low 32 percent against ETSU.
The Bulldogs sit atop the Southern Conference in a three-way tie with Chattanooga and UNCG with a 9-3 league record. The Dogs hold the tiebreaker after defeating both teams. The Bulldogs and Mocs meet for the 115th time in series history with Chattanooga holding a 69-45 series lead all-time.
Samford defeated Chattanooga 73-69 in Tennessee when the two sides met earlier this year. The Dogs overcame a 42-31 halftime deficit at Chattanooga as they held the Mocs to just 27 points in the second half.
Jaden Brownell led the Dogs with 20 points in just 19 minutes while four Samford players reached double figures.
Trey Fort,
Josh Holloway, and
Riley Allenspach all scored 10 points. Samford has won five of the last six meetings between the Bulldogs and the Mocs.Â
Chattanooga enters the game with a 17-8 record and is 9-3 in SoCon play. The Mocs have won five games in a row including a 85-72 win over Furman in their last game. Head coach Dan Earl is in his third season as head coach of Chattanooga after spending seven seasons at VMI. His Chattanooga side was picked to finish second in the Preseason SoCon poll, receiving two first-place votes. The Mocs had Trey Bonham and Honor Huff named to the All-SoCon preseason team and have a balanced attack as four players score in double-figures including three who average 13 ppg.
