Samford Baseball Falls On Walk-Off Grand Slam In Game Three At UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. – UT Martin's Arderrius Towsend hit a walk-off grand slam to left field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Skyhawk baseball team to a 10-6 win over Samford in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Skyhawk Field.
 
With the loss, Samford fell to 8-8 on the season. Samford won the series over UT Martin, two games to one. UT Martin improved to 6-8 with the win.
 
Samford was led in the game by Jake Souders, going 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Jackson Harris went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Jeffrey Ince went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Trey Higgins went 2-for-3 at the plate. Austin Tommasini (0-2) took the loss for Samford, facing the final two batters of the contest.
 
For UT Martin, Towsend's grand slam was his lone hit of the game, going 1-for-4 with four RBI. Brody Capps and Jonah Katsaboulas had two RBI each, while Blaze Bell hit a solo home run. Mason Schropshire (2-1) pitched 1.2 hitless innings of relief to earn the win for the Skyhawks.
 
UT Martin plated a run each in the first, second, third and fifth innings, while Samford scored one in the second inning as the Skyhawks built a 4-1 lead.
 
Samford came back with two runs in the seventh inning and three runs in the eighth inning to take a 6-4 lead. In the seventh inning, Cade Carr and Souders each had an RBI single. In the eighth inning, Ince and Harris had an RBI single each as Samford took a two-run lead.
 
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Cameron Greene, Garner Anderson and T.J. Grines all walked to load the bases with two outs. Capps and Katsaboulas both walked with the bases loaded to tie the score at 6-6. Towsend then hit a grand slam down the left-field line to give the Skyhawks the walk-off 10-6 win.
 
Samford will return home to play host to North Alabama on Tuesday, March 11. The game is set for a 3 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
