BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team entered the ninth inning with a one-run lead, but fell to The Citadel, 4-3, in the second game of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the loss, Samford fell to 19-16 overall and 5-3 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel improved to 19-16 overall and 4-4 in league play.
Samford was led in the loss by
Michael Gupton, who drove in two runs with a home run in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate.
Jeffrey Ince went 2-for-4 for Samford, while
Jake Souders drove in a run, going 1-for-3 in the game.
Cameron Keshock turned in a strong pitching performance, tossing 7.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out 10 batters without allowing a walk.
Josh Leerssen (1-2) took the loss for Samford, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up two runs, just one earned, on two hits.
For The Citadel, T.J. Anderson, Garrett Dill and Aryan Patel drove in a run each. George Derrick Floyd (3-1) pitched 8.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits to earn the win on the mound for The Citadel. Anthony Hausner pitched the final inning to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Samford jumped on top first in the bottom of the first inning when Souders singled up the middle to drive in Ince for a 1-0 Samford lead. In the top of the sixth inning, The Citadel's Anderson scored on a ground out by Dill to knot the score at 1-1.
The Citadel took the lead with one run in the top of the eighth inning. Anderson doubled down the left-field line to drive in Patel for a 2-1 The Citadel advantage.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Gupton hit a two-run home run to left field to give Samford a 3-2 lead. In the top of the ninth inning, Thomas Rollauer scored when Patel reached base on an error, and Garrett Fulmer scored on the error to give The Citadel a 4-3 lead. Samford was unable to score in the bottom of the ninth inning, ending the contest in a 4-3 win for The Citadel.
The teams will conclude their series with a game Sunday afternoon. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
