BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team earned an impressive 7-1 win over Western Carolina in the final game of a three-game Southern Conference series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford improved its season record to 23-20 overall and 9-6 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina fell to 22-21 overall and 6-9 in league play.
The Bulldogs jumped on top first with two runs in the first inning and one run in the third to take an early 3-0 lead. In the first inning,

Parker McDonald then singled to right-center field to drive in Souders. In the second inning,
Matthew Strand doubled to left field to drive in
Angelo Prieto for a three-run Samford lead.
"Every time you play, you'd like to score first and keep them from scoring, but after a tough day offensively for us yesterday for the first time in a really long time, I thought it was a little more critical to jump out on them today," Samford head coach Tony David said. "They got our first two guys out and then Cade got a hit and then Jake hit a ball hard to left and they had it get away from them and we scored and then Parker had a big swing to put us up 2-0."
In the top of the fourth inning, Western Carolina's Trent Turner led the inning off with a solo home run to cut the lead to 3-1. With two outs in the top of the fourth and runners on second and third base, third baseman McDonald made an off-balance throw to retire Noah Quarless at first base to end the threat and keep the lead at 3-1.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Samford added two more runs to push the lead to 5-1.
Michael Gupton scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Strand then hit a sacrifice fly to score Prieto for a four-run Samford lead.
Samford added a run in the seventh inning and another in the eighth inning to make the score 7-1. In the seventh inning, McDonald singled up the middle to drive in
Jackson Harris. In the eighth inning, Harris hit a solo home run to right field for the game's final run.
For the game for Samford, Prieto went 3-for-4 with two doubles at the plate. Harris went 2-for-5 with a home run and one RBI. McDonald went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Carr went 2-for-5 for the Bulldogs.
