Baseball Earns 10-7 Win Over West Georgia

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team picked up a 10-7 non-conference win over West Georgia Tuesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 18-15 on the season. West Georgia fell to 15-15 with the loss.

"This was a really good night for our guys overall," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Coming off that big weekend conference series win and still getting after it tonight was big for our guys. We threw 11 guys and almost all of them threw really well. And we did a great job of answering their runs and then tacking on a few late."

Samford was led at the plate by Jake Souders, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Jackson Harris went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Cade Carr went 2-for-5 at the plate, while Parker McDonald drove in two runs, going 1-for-4. Trey Higgins and Gus Gandy also drove in a run each for Samford.

Samford used 11 different pitchers on the mound in the win. Heath Clevenger (1-0) pitched two thirds of an inning without allowing a hit to earn the win. Trey Sanders pitched the final inning to pick up his first save of the season.

For West Georgia, Jack Witmer went 3-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Cooper Prince drove in two runs, going 1-for-5 at the plate. Camden Diamond (0-1) took the loss for the Wolves, tossing two thirds of an inning and allowing four runs on five hits.

West Georgia started the scoring with a run in the first inning and another in the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead. Samford, however, came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. McDonald reached on an error, driving in Harris for Samford's first run. Souders then scored on another error and McDonald scored on a wild pitch as Samford took a one-run lead.

After West Georgia took the lead back at 4-3 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, Samford took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Souders hit a two-run home run to make the score 5-4. Higgins scored on a balk for a 6-4 lead. Gandy then singled to drive in Angelo Prieto to give Samford a 7-4 advantage.

The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 8-4 in the seventh inning when Harris singled up the middle to drive in Michael Gupton. West Georgia came back with three runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 8-7. Samford added two final runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on RBI by McDonald and Higgins to make the final score 10-7.

Samford will play host to The Citadel for a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
