MACON, Ga. – The Samford University baseball team took the lead in the eighth inning but was unable to hold it as the Bulldogs dropped a 6-5 decision in the second game of a three-game series at Mercer Friday evening at OrthoGeorgia Park.
With the loss, Samford fell to 27-25 overall and 12-8 in Southern Conference play. Mercer improved its record to 33-22 overall and 12-8 in league play. The two teams are now tied for second place in the SoCon standings heading into Saturday's regular season finale.
For Samford in the loss,
Angelo Prieto went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Matthew Strand hit a home run, going 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Jackson Harris,
Parker McDonald,
Michael Gupton and
Gatlin Pitts had one hit and one RBI each.
Josh Leerssen (2-3) pitched the final inning, giving up two runs on four hits to take the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.
Mercer was led by Brant Baughcum, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Ely Brown went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Titan Kamaka homered for the Bears, going 1-for-5 with two RBI. Parker Lester went 2-for-4 for the Bears.
Braydon Kersey (3-4) pitched a third of an inning in relief to earn the win for the Bears. Terry Busse pitched the final inning to pick up his eighth save of the season.
Mercer got off to a hot start, plating three runs in the first inning and one in the second. In the first inning, Ty Dalley doubled to drive in the game's first run and Kamaka then hit a two-run home run for a 3-0 lead. In the second inning, Brown singled to drive in a run to make the score 4-0.
Samford answered with a run in the third inning and another run in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 4-2. In the third inning, Harris singled to drive in Prieto for Samford's first run of the game. In the fourth inning, Strand hit a solo home run to center field to bring Samford to within two runs.
The Bulldogs took the lead with three runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Cade Carr scored the first run on a ground out by McDonald.
Jake Souders later scored on an infield single by Gupton to tie the score. Gupton then scored on a double by Pitts to give Samford a 5-4 lead.
The lead, however, was short lived as the Bears responded with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Brown and Baughcum each had an RBI single in the inning as the Bears took a 6-5 lead. Samford was unable to score in the top of the ninth inning as Mercer came away with the win.
Samford and Mercer will conclude their series with a game Saturday afternoon. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. (CT).
