ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Samford men's golf sits in third place and sophomore Gavin Isbell is tied for first individually after the first round of the Peoples Championship, hosted by Western Carolina Thursday.
 
As a team, Samford shot a six-under-par 278 to place third in the 21-team field. Western Carolina and Belmont are tied for first at 277 for the opening round.
 
Isbell shot a five-under-par 66 to tie for first in the 123-player field. Jack Mikesell is also in the top 10 of the event, tying for eighth with a first-round score of 68.
 
Matthew Smith and Tiaan Hugo are both tied for 46^th with identical scores of 72. Blake Gayles is tied for 71^st at 74.
