BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball program held its 11th-annual Media Home Run Derby Wednesday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Participating in this year's event were Johnny Congdon from ABC 33/40, Blake Gardner from Samford Broadcasting, Dee Jackson from Action Unlimited, Trez Jackson from Action Unlimited, Arielle Schaffer from Samford Broadcasting and
Brad Seitz and
Jackson Gibree from Samford Athletics.
Each contestant got to take five practice swings before the official competition began. In the first round, with each competitor taking 10 swings, Gardner and Seitz hit four home runs each and Dee Jackson hit three, with those three advancing to the finals.
In the final round Gardner and Jackson hit four home runs each and Seitz hit three. They then went to a playoff with Gardner and Jackson and in the third round of the playoff, Gardner won, two homers to one.
Following the competition, a meal from Whataburger was provided for all competitors.
The Samford baseball team is in the final week of its regular season. The Bulldogs will host Wofford in its final series, playing Thursday at 4 p.m., Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
