Oct. 7, 2002

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford's Marian Wagner broke the Samford record for game winning goals in one season when she scored the game's first goal in the 30th minute and goal keeper Sherry Nuckolls recorded her first collegiate shut out as Samford defeated Stetson 2-0 in Atlantic Sun soccer action at the Samford Soccer Field Monday night.

Wagner's goal came after Lisa Robishaw hit the cross bar with a header off a Kellie Carmichael corner kick. The rebound off the bar landed at Wagner's feet and she hit a shot that deflected off of the far post and over the line to give the Bulldogs the lead. It was her sixth goal of the season and Robishaw's third assist.

The Bulldogs scored an insurance goal in the 78th minute when Skye Dregalla blistered a shot into an open net for her third goal of the season. Lindsay Shanks set up the play with a cross that fooled Stetson goaltender Christa Kennon. Kennon came off her line to catch the cross but was unable to get her hands on it and left the goal completely unguarded. Dregalla flirted with another goal a minute later as she struck a ball from 30 yards that hit the cross bar.

Nuckolls made her first start of the year and made five saves to earn her first win of the season. She was aided by the woodwork on a Stetson penalty kick in the 56th minute. Emma Astrom was awarded the penalty after a Samford foul inside the 18-yard box. Astrom's kick hit the cross bar and the left post before Nuckolls could corral the ball. Kelly Kuenning had the Hatters best chance during the run of play when she let loose a shot from 25 yards that Nuckolls had to go high into the air to save.

Marian Wagner set a new Samford record with her fourth game winning goal of the year.

"Sometimes you win games when you don't play very well,' said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "We were fortunate to win tonight. Stetson played very well and we did not play our best game. I thought we played better losing to Jacksonville on Saturday than we did tonight. I thought Sherry played well in goal for us and I am pleased with the result, but we will need to play better if we expect to compete for a championship."

Yellow cards marred the match as seven players received cautions. Stetson received four warnings to three for Samford. The Bulldogs out shot Stetson 14-8 and the Hatters out fouled the Bulldogs 17-16.

The shutout was the fifth of the season for Samford, which ties a school record for most shutouts in a season. Samford improves to 11-2-1 and 5-1-1 in conference play while Stetson drops to 5-6 and 2-3 in the Atlantic Sun.

Samford will travel to Nashville on Friday to face Belmont in a 7 p.m. match. Stetson will return home to face Georgia State on Thursday.
