LIVINGSTON, Ala. ---- The Samford University men's tennis team claimed a 8-1 win over intra-state foe, West Alabama, on Friday. The win was the Bulldogs' final match of the season as they begin preparations for the 2006 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in Nashville, Tenn.
Samford improves to 12-7 overall as they ready for the OVC Tournament in Nashville. The Bulldogs boast a 7-2 conference record heading into the tournament, and third in the conference, as of April 12.
Samford easily claimed the three doubles points, winning all three matches. Jason Thomas and Bradley Weaver downed Sascha Dresselhaus and Denton Meintjes, 8-3 on the No. 1 doubles court. At No. 2 doubles, Hank Grank and Stuart Misner claimed an 8-1 win over Mylan Anderson and Carlin Tighe. James Bryce and Johnny Griffee claimed the No. 3 doubles match, defeating Erick Duran and Michael Garcia, 8-3.
The Bulldogs won five of the six singles matches over West Alabama. Grant won the No. 1 singles point over Dresselhaus, 6-4, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Misner handed Anderson a 6-1, 6-0 loss, and Bryce won the No. 3 singles match over Meintjes, 6-4, 6-2. Griffee won the No. 4 singles point with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Garcia and Jason Thomas claimed the No. 5 point, defeating Tighe, 4-6, 6-4, (1-0).
The Bulldogs return to action on April 21, when they head to Nashville, Tenn., for the 2006 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
