Samford Game Notes
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University basketball team will begin its 2013-14 regular-season schedule at home Friday at 7 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs square off against the Martin Methodist Redhawks in a non-conference contest to be held at the Pete Hanna Center.
Samford (0-0) is coming off a dominant 90-52 exhibition victory against Miles College on Tuesday. In the victory, the Bulldogs'
Tim Williams registered a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Junior
Connor Miller added 18 points and five assists.
Samford finished with 14 players earning game action Tuesday, with 11 scoring at least two points against Miles College. Juniors
Tyler Hood and
Michael Bradley both finished with nine points apiece, while First-Team All-SoCon performer
Raijon Kelly and
Isaiah Williams scored eight each.
Williams, the Bulldogs' true freshman point guard from Buford, Ga., logged a team-high 24 minutes and handed out a game-high seven assists. He also shot 4-of-7 from the field, grabbed three rebounds and finished with two steals.
Sophomore
Russell Wilson started at point guard for Samford and finished with five points, three assists and a rebound in 19 minutes of playing time. True freshmen
Brandon Roberts and
Jordan Capps both added four points apiece.
Samford jumped out to an early 28-4 lead and took a decisive 47-22 lead into the half. The Bulldogs led Tuesday's game wire-to-wire and held its biggest advantage of the night, 80-39, with 7:32 left to play.
Martin Methodist (2-0) has opened the season with back-to-back road victories against Oakwood University and Fisk University and nearly won at Jacksonville State on Wednesday, 80-78.
In their season-opening contest, the Redhawks defeated Oakwood University, 55-54. Both of Martin Methodist's wins this year have been on the road.
The Redhawks' Reginald Porter is averaging a double-double this season with 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. Porter is a 6-foot-8 junior forward from Little Rock, Ark., who transferred to Martin Methodist from Southwest Tennessee Community College.
Last season, Samford and Martin Methodist squared off in Birmingham for the Bulldogs' home-opener of the 2012-13 campaign. It was only fitting that Head Coach Bennie Seltzer recorded his first career victory via a brilliant defensive performance as Samford earned a 59-40 triumph over the Redhawks.
The Bulldogs limited Martin Methodist to a 27.1 shooting percentage from the field last season. Samford's defense also held the Redhawks to a lackluster 7.7 percent outing from 3-point range.
The Bulldogs have won four of their last five home openers. Their last loss to open a home season occurred in 2011 against Youngstown State.
Following Friday's season-opening contest against Martin Methodist, the Samford University basketball team will next be in action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs travel to Arlington, Texas, for a key road contest versus the UT Arlington Mavericks to be held at the College Park Center.
