STARKVILLE, MISS. – The Samford University women's tennis team will arguably face its toughest road test in nonconference play Wednesday at 3 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs square off against the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a pivotal South Region matchup to be held at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.

Samford (5-3) enters the contest with a full head of steam after cruising to a 5-2 home victory against Southern Miss on Saturday. With their win, the Bulldogs improved to 5-1 when playing at home in the Samford Tennis Center.

Samford swept the doubles point from Southern Miss and then picked up straight-set victories in singles play from Kristin Lewis, Emily Mallory, AnnMarie Lyon and Adri Lochner.

Samford's Lewis tallied a 7-5, 6-0 triumph on court No. 1, while Mallory cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Mackenzie Oskin in the No. 4 singles matchup and Lyon rolled past the Golden Eagles' Macie Case, 6-0, 6-1, on court No. 5.

The Bulldogs' Lewis and Mallory both improved to 6-1 in singles play this season.

Samford's quickest singles victory of the day occurred on court No. 6 where Lochner blanked Southern Miss' Emily Nettles, 6-0, 6-0. With her dominant win, Lochner improved to 3-3 in singles play this year. In doubles play, Lochner teamed with true freshman Carita Moolman to defeat the Golden Eagles' duo comprised of Kate Lanier and Oskin to move to 5-2 this season.

Mississippi State (4-2) heads into Wednesday's match after earning a hard-fought 4-3 neutral site victory over Wisconsin on Saturday. The victory snapped a two-match losing streak against Oklahoma State, 6-0, and Minnesota, 4-3.

Mississippi State's standout doubles pair of Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran is expected to be an important component for the Maroon and White this year. The duo rose to 4-0 on the dual season after compiling consecutive top-spot wins against their Minnesota and Wisconsin opponents over the weekend.

Additionally, Mississippi State's doubles tandem of Petra Ferancova and Georgiana Patrasc is 3-0 this season on court No. 3.

In singles play, Perper continues to lead the Mississippi State lineup with a 4-1 record in dual-match play, while freshmen Patrasc, Lien Van Geel and Sarai Flores have also been competitive factors this season. Patrasc, who has played predominantly at the No. 2 position in her debut season, currently stands at 3-3 this season. Van Geel is also 3-3, while Flores has posted a 4-2 record.

Following Wednesday's key road contest at Mississippi State, the Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at noon (CST) as the Bulldogs open their 2013 Southern Conference schedule at home against the Western Carolina Catamounts in the Samford Tennis Center.
