BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University women's tennis team cruised to a dominating 7-0 home victory against the Wofford Terriers on Sunday in a Southern Conference matchup held at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the win,
Samford (7-10, 2-4 SoCon) improved to 7-3 at home this season and snapped a six-match losing streak dating back to March. 3. Samford also posted its second 7-0 triumph play in conference play this year. In their March 3 triumph, the Bulldogs reeled off a similar 7-0 victory over Western Carolina.
Wofford (5-10, 1-4 SoCon) suffered its sixth straight defeat Sunday and moved to 1-5 in road matches. Since earning a 5-2 victory over Mercer on March 10, the Terriers have dropped consecutive losses to Presbyterian, Charleston Southern, Charlotte, Furman, Chattanooga and Samford.
The Bulldogs swept Sunday's doubles competition and then received singles victories from
Kristin Lewis,
Stephanie N'tcha,
Jessica Northcutt,
Carita Moolman,
Emily Mallory and
AnnMarie Lyon to record the lopsided 7-0 triumph. Samford won in straight sets on five of the six courts, while Northcutt tallied a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4) win on court No. 3.
Northcutt, the Bulldogs' talented true freshman from Duluth, Ga., improved her singles record on the season to 5-6 on Sunday. Samford's leaders in dual-match play this year are Mallory (10-4), N'tcha (10-5) and Lewis (9-7).
In doubles play, the Bulldogs' tandem comprised of
Adri Lochner and Moolman improved its team-best record to 10-5 with a 9-7 victory over Wofford's combination of Lucy Schermerhorn and Julia Paulson, 9-7.
The Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Friday at 1:30 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs close out their 2013 home schedule with a SoCon matchup against the Davidson Wildcats to be held at the Samford Tennis Center.
