BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford baseball team will travel to Lexington, Va., for a three-game Southern Conference series with the VMI Keydets this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 5 p.m. (CST), Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a record of 9-13 overall and 2-1 in SoCon play. Samford split a pair of midweek games this week, winning at Alabama State, and falling at home to Jacksonville State. Last weekend, the Bulldogs won two-of-three games from Furman.
For Samford at the plate this season,
Austin Edens is batting .409 with six doubles, a home run and nine RBI.
Hunter Swilling is batting.330 with four homers and 22 RBI, while
Richard Greene is hitting .316 with four home runs and 19 RBI.
Heath Quinn has four homers and 13 RBI for the Bulldogs.
Right-handed pitcher
Alex Ledford (2-2, 4.04 ERA) is scheduled to be Samford's starter for Friday night's series opener. Right-hander
Parker Curry (2-3, 5.60 ERA) will get the starting nod in Saturday's contest, while right-hander
Jared Brasher (0-1, 11.08 ERA) is scheduled to start Sunday's series finale.
The Keydets are currently 5-12 overall and 1-2 in SoCon games. VMI dropped a pair of midweek games this week. Last weekend, the Keydets lost two-of-three games at Wofford.
Offensively, Ray Lopez leads VMI with a .381 average with four doubles, two triples and seven RBI. Jordan Tarsovich is hitting .348 with four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI. Tyler Tharp has a .309 average with four doubles and a team-high 10 RBI.
For VMI on the mound, left-handed pitcher Austin Heenan (0-1, 4.26 ERA) will start Friday night's game. Left-hander Brandon Barbery (2-1, 2.35 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday's game, and VMI has not named a starter for Sunday's contest.
Samford and VMI have met seven previous times, with Samford holding a 6-1 advantage in the series. The teams last met during the 2003 season. Samford won two-of-three games in the season-opening series in 2003.
