Baseball Takes Series From Toledo With 16-8 Win Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team broke a close game open with seven runs in the sixth inning on its way to a 16-8 win over Toledo in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Samford took the lead early with two runs in the bottom of the first when Ayrton Schafer singled to drive in Sonny DiChiara and Max Pinto for a 2-0 Samford lead.
  • Toledo plated two runs in the second inning and two more in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.
  • Samford tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, with the first coming on a lead-off home run by Pinto.
  • After Toledo retook the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth inning at 6-4, Samford plated seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 11-6 lead.
  • In the sixth inning for Samford, Will David drove in three runs, DiChiara drove in two runs and Brooks Carlson drove in one. David also scored on a Toledo error in the inning.
  • Samford added five more runs in the seventh inning to make the score 16-6. Ryan Crockett drove in two runs in the sixth, while Carlson and Tyler McManus drove in one run each. McManus also scored on wild pitch in the inning.
  • Toledo added one run in the eighth inning and another run in the ninth to make the final score 16-8.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Samford used five pitchers in the game, with Carson Cupo (2-0) earning the win. Cupo pitched 1.1 hitless innings of relief in the game.
  • Toledo used a total of eight pitchers, with Kyle Bischoff (0-1) taking the loss.
 
NOTABLES 
  • Max Pinto went 3-for-4 with a home run and one RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
  • Sonny DiChiara went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
  • Brooks Carlson went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI for Samford.

  • For Toledo, Marcus Strother went 3-for-5 at the plate.
