BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team split its Southern Conference doubleheader with Mercer Friday at Joe Lee Griffin Field. In the first game, Samford overcame an eight-run deficit to win, 10-9. In the second contest, the Bulldogs fell to the Bears by a score of 12-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mercer plated two runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning and five runs in the third to take an 8-0 lead.
- Samford scored its first run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 8-1. Brooks Carlson hit a solo home run to center field for Samford's first run of the game.
- In the sixth inning Samford plated eight runs to take a 9-8 lead. Kaden Dreier drove in three runs over two at-bats in the inning. Will David, Carlson, Tyler McManus and Towns King drove in a run each in the inning. King also scored on an error for the Bulldogs.
- Mercer knotted the score at 9-9 with a run in the top of the seventh inning.
- Samford took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. McManus singled to left field to drive in Max Pinto to give Samford a 10-9 lead.
ON THE MOUND
- Carson Cupo (5-0) earned the win on the mound for Samford, pitching 1.0 inning in relief, allowing one run on two hits.
- Chase Isbell picked up his sixth save of the season, tossing the final inning without allowing a run.
- Luke Sutko (2-3) took the loss for Mercer, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
NOTABLES
- Carlson went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Dreier went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI for the Bulldogs.
- McManus was 2-for-4 with two RBI as well for Samford.
- For Mercer, David Burke homered twice, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Mercer took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, Samford came back with three runs in the third inning to cut the lead to 4-3. McManus, Ryan Crockett and King drove in a run each in the inning for Samford.
- Mercer plated two runs in the fourth inning, but Samford came back with two of its own in the fifth inning to make the score 6-5. David and Taylor Garris drove in a run each for Samford in the inning.
- Mercer plated a run in the seventh inning and five more in the ninth to pull away for the 12-5 win.
ON THE MOUND
- Jesse McCord (3-5) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up six runs, just five earned, on six hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
- Josh Farmer (4-0) pitched 4.1 innings in relief, giving up no runs on four hits to earn the win for the Bears.
NOTABLES
- Garris went 3-for-3 with a double and one RBI to lead Samford at the plate.
- Brandon Michie led Mercer, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
