HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Samford Bulldogs struggled to find their rhythm early in the opening set, as The Citadel jumped out to an 8-2 lead forcing an early timeout from head coach
Keylor Chan. The visitors from Charleston, S.C. continued to build to a 10-point advantage, before Samford responded with a five-point run of their own pulling within five, 17-12. The Citadel would rally out of a timeout to take the first set 25-14.

The two squads went back-and-forth in the early goings of the second frame until Samford opened a four-point advantage forcing The Citadel into a quick timeout with Samford leading 9-5. The Citadel looked to rally, but the Bulldogs would not be denied taking a commanding 21-13 lead with a block by senior
Briana Holmes and junior
Sarah Hayes Farley. Samford closed the set 25-16 behind senior
Lauren Deaton and redshirt sophomore
Kenya McQuirter, who each tallied six kills through the first two sets.

With the match even at a set apiece, the Dogs continued to build momentum opening the third set with a 6-2 run. It was all Samford through the middle of the third frame behind a six-point rally that included a pair of kills from McQuirter, a kill from Holmes, and a service ace from
Kate Wonus as the Dogs led 13-5. Samford quelled a Citadel run late in the third set behind a big-time shot from McQuirter and a Citadel serving error taking the frame 25-18.

The Bulldogs looked to close out the match in the fourth set jumping out to a 7-3 lead with Deaton racking up two kills and a block in the Samford run. The Citadel rallied tying up the set at 10-10, and the back-and-forth continued until the diving defensive efforts of
Emily Naubert and a quick-set kill by
Briana Holmes brought the Pete to its feet as Samford took a 15-13 lead into the media timeout. Samford continued to build a lead staving off The Citadel's comeback efforts with thunderous kill from
Sarah Hayes Farley to seal the fourth set 25-18.
