CHARLESTON, S.C. – Samford sophomore pitcher
Jacob Cravey turned in an impressive performance on the mound to lead the Bulldogs to an 8-2 win at The Citadel in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Joseph P. Riley Park.
With the win, Samford improves to 24-23 overall and 10-6 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel falls to 22-26 overall and 2-14 in league play.
Cravey (3-3) pitched a career-high 8.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out seven batters without allowing a walk to earn the win on the mound.
Cole Fryman pitched the final inning, giving up one run on one hit.
"This was just an incredible job by Cravey on the mound for us again to set the tone," Samford head coach
Tony David said. "With the game on the line with runners on first and third and their best guy at the plate, he got the big out with the game on the line."
For Samford at the plate,
Colton Ledbetter went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBI.
Garrett Staton went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and one RBI.
Towns King and
Stephen Klein had two hits and an RBI each for Samford.
"Led had an incredible day at the plate and Staton made some huge plays at second," David said. "We control where we want to go in this thing. I'm proud of the guys for a great game."
The Citadel was led at the plate by Noah Mitchell, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and one RBI. Devin Beckley (4-4) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits to take the loss for The Citadel.
Samford jumped on top with two runs in the top of the third inning. King doubled down the left-field line to drive in
Blake Bortak for the first run of the game. Ledbetter then doubled to center field to drive in King for a 2-0 Samford lead.
The Citadel got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Travis Lott singled to center field to drive in Sawyer Reeves to cut the Samford lead to 2-1.
Samford added to its lead with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Klein singled through the right side of the infield to drive in
Garrett Howe to make the score 3-1. Ledbetter then scored when
Maurice Hampton Jr. reached on an error to push the Samford lead to 4-1.
Kaden Dreier then walked with the bases loaded to bring in Klein to make the score 5-1.
In the eighth inning, Samford's Staton homered to left-center field for a 6-1 Samford lead. Ledbetter later hit a two-run homer down the right-field line to make the score 8-1. The Citadel plated one final run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Mitchell homered to left-center field to make the final score 8-2.
Samford and The Citadel will continue their series with a game Saturday afternoon. The game is set for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from Riley Park.
