Volleyball Swept at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Samford Volleyball team fell 3-0 at The Citadel in a Southern Conference bout on Friday evening.

With the loss, Samford drops to 9-12 overall and 4-5 in SoCon action while the Citadel improves to 21-0 overall and 9-0 in league play.

Gracie Lynn Butler led the Bulldogs with 11 kills, while finishing just two digs shy of her seventh double-double of the year at eight. The junior outside hitter also led the squad with four block assists.

Kate Wonus and Kaleigh Meritt both logged seven kills each, with Wonus hitting .417 and Meritt accounting for eight digs. Greer Golden also posted a team-high four block assists while Kate Morgan led the defensive efforts with 10 digs.

Setters Kayla Keshock and Lexi Thatcher both finished the night with 12 assists each.

Samford took a 13-11 lead in set one following a kill from Kate Wonus, but The Citadel responded with a 6-0 run that gave them a 17-13 lead. The home Bulldogs extended their lead to 23-18 from there and eventually claimed the set 25-21.

Set two followed a similar narrative, with the visiting Bulldogs using a 3-0 run to trim their deficit to 12-11 in favor of The Citadel. The home Bulldogs created separation by rattling off a 4-0 run to put them up 17-12. A 3-0 run down the stretch gave the Citadel a 21-15 lead and enough breathing room to take work towards a 25-17 set-two victory.

The Citadel jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set three and later used a 3-0 run to take a 14-8 lead. Samford fought back to make it 14-11 following a Morgan ace, but the visiting Bulldogs took back momentum with a 4-0 run to go up 19-12. Butler got Samford back within three points when a service ace cut the deficit to 21-18, but the Citadel tallied the match's final four points to seal the win.

"The Citadel is undefeated for a reason and our ability to execute over time caught us," Head Coach Keylor Chan said. "Kate Morgan and Kate Wonus both played well and kept us in the match for a bit but to play at the level needed we needed more."

The Bulldogs face a quick turnaround, with a 4:00 p.m. (CST) match at UNCG on Saturday up next.
