BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford University volleyball team welcomes in six new student-athletes to this season's squad with each being introduced on SamfordSports.com over the duration of this week.
 
Wheaton, Illinois native Alana Schouten looks to help fill a huge hole in the Bulldogs defense this season left by departing libero Chelsi Carter. Schouten definitely has the pedigree as she was tabbed as an AAU All-American this past season with her club team at the AAU championships in Orlando, Florida, and will have help from talented transfer newcomer Morgan St. Germain.   
 
Head Coach Derek Schroeder had this to say when asked about Schouten and her style of play.
 
Where do you see Schouten making the biggest impact on the team?
"Schouten will immediately affect our ball control. We were so lucky to add her late to our recruiting class. I like a specific set of intangibles with my ball control/liberos and Schouten brings them in spades." 
 
What are some of Schouten's strengths and what intangibles does she possess?
"Schouten is the type of kid you have to kick out of the gym. She takes ownership of her play and is working outside of practice time to improve." 
 
What will fans notice about Schouten's play on the court?
"What the fans will notice most is that Schouten is a gamer; she will sacrifice to make a play." 
 
In your opinion what former student-athlete does Schouten's style of play reflect?
"Schouten has a lot of characteristics like Chelsi: the volleyball IQ, being a gamer and the desire she had on and off the court. I'm excited for her future."

High School: Played for head coach Carole Kristensen at Wheaton North High School…in 2014 tabbed All-American at the 2014 AAU's in Orlando and was named to the All-Tournament team for three other tournaments for her club.

Personal: Full name is Alana Victoria Schouten…born on May 21, 1997…daughter of Larry and Dashie Schouten…majoring in Health Science.
