Volleyball to Face Wofford and Furman in First SoCon Road Trip of Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Volleyball team will play its first Southern Conference road matches this season when they take on Wofford on Friday and Furman on Saturday.

First serve against the Terriers is set for 5:00 p.m. (CST) while their match at Furman is slated for a 3:00 p.m. (CST) start.

Samford posted a record of 1-1 over the opening weekend of SoCon play at the Pete Hanna Center, besting UNCG 3-1 on Sept. 22 and falling 3-0 to The Citadel.

Despite dropping set one to UNCG last Friday, the Bulldogs rallied to take the next three sets. Junior outside hitter Gracie Lynn Butler recorded a career-best 26 kills while posting a .434 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kaleigh Meritt also tallied double-digit kills, logging 10 and hitting .391 in the win.

Gracie Lynn Butler and Meritt have been the primary attacking options for Samford, accounting for 372 of the Bulldogs' 623 kills (60 percent). Butler currently ranks second in the Southern Conference with an average of 4.74 kills per set while Meritt sits sixth in the league with 135 total kills. Butler comes into the week ranking sixth in the country with a total of 237 kills, a mark that also ranks second in the SoCon. Â

Freshman setter Lexi Thatcher comes into the week leading the team and ranking second in the SoCon with 9.72 assists per set.

The Bulldogs hold a 21-7 advantage over Wofford and have won seven of the last nine meetings. Samford boasts a 23-18 record over Furman and has won 13 straight match-ups against the Paladins, with its most recent win coming in the championship game of the Southern Conference Tournament on Nov. 20, 2022.
